After refusing a mysterious tech update, a man realizes the system installed itself anyway—into his thoughts, his surroundings, and his reality.

It installed itself overnight, despite me disabling automatic updates weeks ago. My phone’s home screen was the same, but something about it felt… heavier.

Apps rearranged themselves. Notifications showed up before events happened—before I’d even typed anything. And when I whispered a thought aloud, my phone buzzed with “suggested results.”

I shut it off. Put it in the freezer. Bought a burner flip phone.

That same day, a man in a gray coat bumped into me on the subway and whispered, “They’re testing predictive protocol on early adopters. You never accepted the update—they just pushed it into your behavior stream.”

Before I could ask what that meant, he slipped away.

I went home. My laptop powered itself on. My smart TV displayed my name. Then, the lights in my kitchen flickered in perfect sync with the word COMPLY scrolling across the screen.

I tossed every device out the window. Changed passwords. Switched SIMs. Left town.

But in a roadside motel 600 miles away, the TV turned on by itself. No remote. No voice control.

Just my face staring back at me from a camera feed I never knew existed.
